Möbel·Europäisches Kunsthandwerk·Gemälde

A Russian Mahogany and Ormolu-Mounted Empire Fauteuil

Saint Petersburg, ca. 1810/15
attributed to Heinrich Gambs (1765-1831)

Due to his high artistry and his ingenious mercantilism Heinrich Gambs led a flourishing workshop, which ranks among the best successors of the "Roentgen-manufacture".

After the enthronement of tsar Alexander I. in 1801 he ascended to be the principal court-ebonist and was entitled "court-mechanic".

For this Fauteuil and further furniture from his workshop, chased and gilded mounts were crafted and applied in variation. Frequent elements of decoration are stars, garlands and faunal figurativeness.

Provenance:
Private Collection Milan

Literature:
Henriette Stuchtey, “Die Familie Gambs”, Weltkunst no. 21, November 1995
