An Italian gilt bronze-mounted marble busts of a Venetian blackamoor

An Italian gilt bronze-mounted marble busts of a Venetian blackamoor

Venice, c. 1740/50

The ears with holes of former earrings

h: 61 cm; w: 39 cm

The bust is an extremely refined example of Venetian taste to the mid of the 18th century. The fascination with the representation of Africans runs through centuries of European Art and had a great success in Venice.

The head is executed in Belgian black marble - the trapery in Breccia marble with an inset ormolu button band on a pink granite socle.

Such busts were often used as a decoration for the main rooms of Italian palaces.
