St. Catherine of Alexandria
Styria (Austria), end of 14th century
Orig. polychromed limewood
h: 58,5 cm
The sculpture still displays late Romanesque facial features, while the drapery already indicates a somewhat later origin - which is not unusual for Austrian regions in the Middle Ages.
A sculpture of Mary with child, from the same region in the Johanneum, Graz, bears a very similar head-scarf and crown and is dated ca. 1330/40.
Prov.: Private collection, South Germany
