An Allegory of Smell
This painting reminds of a garden of unique trees and plants that Elisabeth Clara Eugenie owned in Brussels at the beginning of the 17th century. It depicts more than 30 species of plants and flowers, some animals associated with the sense of smell, such as the hunting dog and the civet, and various objects from the world of perfume, such as perfumed gloves, containers of fragrant substances, an air freshener and distillator for distilling essences.
