Wooded river landscape with St. Hubertus
Jan Brueghel the Younger
(1601 - Antwerp – 1678)
Antwerp, c. 1620-1630
46 x 70 cm
oil / panel
This painting, with its dense forest scenery, the sensitive depiction of figures and animals and an exquisite diligence in the reproduction of details, is an interesting rediscovery in the work of Jan Brueghel the Younger.
The painting was created in Antwerp in the 1630s and was probably inspired by Rubens version of the same subject, which is in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. In this work, he certainly adopted important features of his father but created a completely new composition - a further development of his father's composition at the highest level.
There is an expertise for this painting by Dr. Klaus Ertz (October 2021).
